The Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Islanders meet in NHL action from the Nassau Coliseum on Thursday night.
The Chicago Blackhawks will look for a bounce back performance after falling 4-2 on New Year’s Day in the 2019 Winter Classic to the Boston Bruins. Brendan Perlini opened the scoring for the Blackhawks but Boston would tie the game at 1-1 by the end of the period thanks to a goal from David Pastrnak. Dominik Kahun would re-take the lead for Chicago just after the midway point of the 2nd before Patrice Bergeron equalized for Boston. The Bruins would take their 1st lead of the game in the 3rd and would ice it with a 4th goal on a yawning empty net with less than a minute to go. Cam Ward took the loss, falling to 6-7-4 this season after giving up 3 goals on 35 shots in the losing effort.

The New York Islanders will look to add to their current 4-game winning streak after a 3-1 road win over Buffalo in their last outing. We had a scoreless stalemate through the opening 20 minutes before Leo Komarov found the back of the net to give the Isles a 1-0 lead with the lone goal of the 2nd period. Brock Nelson doubled the advantage just 1:45 into the 3rd period but Kyle Okposo would cut the deficit back to 2-1 just after the midway point of the 3rd. That was as close as Sabres would get however as Ryan Pulock iced the win with an empty-netter late in the 3rd. Robin Lehner got the win to improve to 9-6-3 this season after stopping 39 of 40 shots faced in the winning effort.
Chicago is 21-50 in their last 71 games against a team with a winning record and 24-50 in their last 74 games overall while the over is 7-2-2 in their last 11 road games. New York is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall and 5-1 in their last 6 games following a win while the under is 5-0-1 in their last 6 games against the Western Conference. Chicago is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
The plus money is tempting considering how much success Chicago has had in this matchup. However, a lot of that success came when the Blackhawks weren’t in full struggle mode like they’ve been in this season. New York is playing some really good hockey right now and I think they extend their winning streak to 5 here even though I’m not overly happy about the juice.
