The Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat meet Friday in NBA preseason action at the American Airlines Arena.
The Atlanta Hawks look to get a game above a .500 record when they get their first preseason road games. The Hawks are averaging 112.5 points on 46.6 percent shooting and allowing 115.5 points on 44.4 percent shooting. Trae Young is averaging 16 points and 5.5 assists while Taurean Prince is averaging 15.3 points and six rebounds. DeAndre’ Bembry is the third double-digit scorer and Alex Len is dishing two assists. The Hawks still aren’t playing a lick of defense, as they’re 32nd in preseason points allowed, but they’re coming off an impressive winner where Young made a deep three in the final seconds. The Hawks have been an exciting team offensively, but if they’re going to surprise some people this season, they must improve and show more effort at the other end of the court. The Atlanta Hawks have split their last eight preseason games.
The Miami Heat look for their third straight win to finish the preseason with a .500 record. The Heat are averaging 111.4 points on 42.4 percent shooting and allowing 112.8 points on 47.6 percent shooting. Bam Adebayo is averaging 16 points and 8.5 rebounds while Rodney McGruder is averaging 15.3 points and three assists. Josh Richardson is the third double-digit scorer and Hassan Whiteside is grabbing 12.5 rebounds. The Heat have turned their preseason around with back-to-back victories, and they’re getting highly impressive play from some of their younger role players. It’s still interesting to see how the Heat play given that majority of the roster has been thrown in trade rumors with the Minnesota Timberwolves for Jimmy Butler. However, at home, the Heat have been solid in their last two meaningless games. The Miami Heat have split their last eight preseason games.
The Hawks are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 road games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games playing on 1 days rest. The Heat are 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games. The Hawks are 1-3-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Miami and 2-8-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The Miami Heat have played better in their last two preseason games and are starting to look like the gritty, defensive club we expect to see in the regular season. The Atlanta Hawks have been flashy at times, but the lack of defense they’ve played makes it hard to get behind them, especially on the road against a team that plays with toughness and a defensive mindset. I’ve been avoiding laying decent sized chalk, but this is a game the Heat could really run away with if the Hawks aren’t careful.
